IUCN Conservation Outlook Report Released for K’gari

Every three years, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) undertakes an independent evaluation of the conservation outlook for all natural World Heritage properties. Given COVID-19, there was a slight delay in the latest round, with the latest reports released in October 2025.

K’gari Fire Gym – Drafting Water Practice

Advisory Committee releases K’gari World Heritage Strategic Plan

Over the last 6 months, members of the K’gari (Fraser Island) World Heritage Advisory Committee (KWHAC) have developed a Strategic Plan for the World Heritage property to address threats identified in the IUCN World Heritage Outlook Report published in 2020.

Cultural burning on K’gari

In September 2024, the Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) collaborated with Butchulla Traditional Owners to conduct cool burns on K’gari as part of the Galangoor Gira (Good Fire) project. These burns took place on one of their Aboriginal Freehold Land blocks, known as Oysterman’s Lease.

FINIA on Tour – Annual Field Trip 2024

In June, FINIA members headed off to K’gari for their annual field trip and on-island meeting. The annual field trips have become a highlight in the FINIA calendar and are an opportunity for partnering organisations to network, share information and learn more about K’gari.

FIDO’s Pandanus Restoration Program

Since about 2008 on the singularly beautiful island paradise of K’gari, the pandanus palm (Pandanus tectorius) has been plagued by the pandanus leaf hopper (Jamella australiae).
