IUCN Conservation Outlook Report Released for K’gari

Every three years, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) undertakes an independent evaluation of the conservation outlook for all natural World Heritage properties. Given COVID-19, there was a slight delay in the latest round, with the latest reports released in October 2025.

FINIA Field Trip 2025

It is incredible to think that this year, marks 20 years since the formation of FINIA and their first weed workshop held on K’gari. Weeds and biosecurity are still a massive (and growing) issue for the World Heritage property and an area that concerns many of our partners.

FINIA on Tour – Annual Field Trip 2024

In June, FINIA members headed off to K’gari for their annual field trip and on-island meeting. The annual field trips have become a highlight in the FINIA calendar and are an opportunity for partnering organisations to network, share information and learn more about K’gari.

Butchulla Water Stories: Seagrass Watch

Celebrating Thirty Years of World Heritage

There is little doubt that the pathway to World Heritage for K’gari (Fraser Island) has been contentious. The colonial fight for K’gari started in 1770, when HMS Endeavour, carrying Lt James Cook and Sir Joseph Banks, scientist and sponsor for the trip, recorded the island.

Aiding Bushfire Recovery on K’gari

On the morning of 2 June 2022, a team of volunteers recruited by the Fraser Island Defenders Organisation (FIDO) converged on Eurong to participate in the K’gari Coastal Foreshore Rehabilitation and Pandanus Project.
