Bernie Shakeshaft, Australia’s 2020 Local Hero
Over the years, K’gari has attracted some pretty special characters. One of these, Bernie Shakeshaft, who works with at-risk teenagers in Armidale to help them on the path towards employment and further education and training, has been named this year’s Australian Local Hero in the Australian of the Year Awards.

Six FIDO volunteers (Chris Breitenbach, Larry Hohenhaus, Geoff Carwardine, Sandra Naidoo, Navin Naidoo and Su Dawson) joined leader, Peter Shooter for the recent Happy Valley trip from 27 October to 2 November. They also had the pleasure of the company of Jodie Rainbow, Genevieve Rainbow, Louise Roberts and Blayde Foley from the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation for three days, Tuesday to Thursday.

Twenty-one recipients have been awarded a Queensland Citizen Science Grant, with more than $580,000 funding committed over three years to help increase Queenslanders’ participation in citizen science.
(more…)Update on FIDO’s Weed Eradication Program – Happy Valley
Between 9 and 15 June, 2019, FIDO’s Bush Regeneration Program again targeted Happy Valley. Coming from all over Southern Queensland, the group’s volunteers split into two teams and put in over 140 hours of hard work over the week.

It’s been a good season for weeds on Fraser Island. Some heavy falls of rain in June with regular showers for the rest of the month and into early July. Then the sun came out to encourage growth.
(more…)Preparing for the Biennial K’gari (Fraser Island) Conference
One area where there has been a huge amount of collaboration is the upcoming 8th Biennial K’gari (Fraser Island) Conference. The conferences, which were initiated by FIDO in 2004, are unique in the World Heritage space, and have been an excellent tool for stakeholders and researchers to share knowledge and information about K’gari.
