Feature Pest: Mother-in-Law’s Tongue
Native to some parts of tropical western Africa (i.e. Zaire and northern Nigeria), mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata) is regarded as an environmental weed in Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory, and as a “sleeper weed” in other parts of Australia.
(more…)In it for the long term – the Sandy Cape Lighthouse Weeding Program
Lighthouse keepers manned Sandy Cape Lighthouse between 1870 and 1997. Like many lighthouses in remote locations, supplies came in, but nothing left the site, with rubbish dumped ‘over the hill.’ With only tank water, hardy plants were introduced by keepers. Many of these survived and escaped, spreading out over 1Km radius.

In early December last year, Butchulla Land and Sea rangers participated in a training day with ReefClean partners Conservation Volunteers Australia. A marine debris clean and audit was completed at Eli Creek, a popular local fishing spot and unfortunately a dumping ground for residential waste.

Fraser Coast Regional Council recently developed the Draft Fraser Coast Waste Strategy 2019-2029. The new Strategy has a focus on resource leadership that delivers the greatest benefits to our local community in terms of resource recovery, reducing landfill, environmental amenity and economic development.

As part of the ‘Future Waste’ team for Fraser Coast Regional Council, Jeanette Harrold, Environmental Services Manager said that the process of consulting with the Fraser Island (K’gari) community had left her questioning her personal waste management decisions.

Following a very successful Easter Cassia Blitz at Happy Valley at the end of April where a very significant amount of Lantana was also removed, FIDO volunteers at Eurong in July turned their attention to attacking Lantana. (more…)
A Whole Lot of Rubbish
The Queensland Government is currently considering the Waste Reduction and Recycling Amendment Bill 2017. While strongly supporting the Bill for what it may do for waste reduction generally, its implications for Fraser Island were not immediately apparent until I began working on a submission to the Parliamentary Committee reviewing it. Two key features of the proposed legislation are a ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags and the introduction of a container refund scheme for Queensland. (more…)
