K’gari (Fraser Island) – the fire and the aftermath

On 14 October, campers in the Ngkala Rocks vicinity left an unextinguished campfire at their campsite in the North of the Island. A raging South Easter was blowing. The coals reignited, fanned by the wind, and the fire spread into the adjacent vegetation. That was the start of the calamity.

K’gari Research Archive

The K’gari Research Archive is “housed” at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Sippy Downs Campus. The Archive is the most significant collection of historical documents, data, research reports, oral histories and photographs related to K’gari.

Weed Watch Alert: Peruvian Primrose

Native to South America, Peruvian primrose (Ludwigia peruviana) is a small shrub that has become a serious pest weed in wetlands around Sydney. Peruvian primrose has not yet been found in Queensland but was recently located in Northern NSW.

Great Sandy National Park Wildfires

The wildfires that have affected much of Australia these past months didn’t spare the Great Sandy National Park either. Both the K’gari (Fraser Island) and Cooloola sections of the park experienced wildfire events during this time, including one wildfire on the island and five wildfires within Cooloola.
