What’s in your mud – getting dirty to find out how to protect K’gari
Most drivers wash their vehicles after leaving K’gari to remove salt and sand, but many arrive with remnants of their last adventure still clinging to tyres and mudguards.

In September 2024, the Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) collaborated with Butchulla Traditional Owners to conduct cool burns on K’gari as part of the Galangoor Gira (Good Fire) project. These burns took place on one of their Aboriginal Freehold Land blocks, known as Oysterman’s Lease.

Ten Butchulla Land and Sea Rangers recently joined K’gari Biosecurity Officer, Seth Henaway, AJ Perkins from the NSW Threatened Species Team, Department of Agriculture’s Forestry Pathologist Dr Geoff Pegg and CSIRO specialists Tracey Steinrucken (Invasive Pathways) and Tim Vance (Aquatic Weeds) for an intensive 1-day introduction to the world of invasive weeds, pests and diseases.

The need for biosecurity is growing in importance day by day with more threats waiting on the horizon. The recent detection of tilapia on K’gari is a new threat stacked on the 200-plus harmful species already on the island.

In June, FINIA members headed off to K’gari for their annual field trip and on-island meeting. The annual field trips have become a highlight in the FINIA calendar and are an opportunity for partnering organisations to network, share information and learn more about K’gari.
