Two-way learning opportunity for QUT students and teachers
With thanks to the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation’s Land and Sea Program
Queensland University of Technology (QUT) ecology students (95 students participated across three trips) held their inaugural field trip to study different forest types’ cultural and ecological characteristics on K’gari in early September 2021.

FINIA Partners Welcome Bushfire Review Recommendations
The Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC (BAC) welcomed the IGEM K’gari Bushfire Review report and its recommendations. The BAC, who made a lengthy submission to the Review Team and co-facilitated an IGEM Review workshop with the Butchulla community, was pleased to see many of their recommendations incorporated into the final report.

What did we learn? The K’gari Bushfire Review
In late May, the Inspector-General Emergency Management’s review report and the government’s response to the K’gari (Fraser Island) bushfires were tabled in State Parliament. The government response states that all 38 of the report’s recommendations were supported or supported in principle.

The people of Fraser Island: Working through 250 years of racial double coding
I am from the Wondunna Clan of the Badtjala nation. Our traditional country is the region encompassing all of Fraser Island. On the mainland, our traditional boundaries extend from Double Island Point in the south, to Bauple Mountain in the west and the mouth of the Burrum River in the north. We speak as a sovereign nation as our rights have not been ceded.
