We need you for the Easter Cassia Blitz!
29th April to 5th May 2018
Fraser Island Defenders Organisation (FIDO), Fraser Island Natural Integrity Alliance (FINIA) and the Fraser Island Association (FIA) are collaborating on a joint assault on Easter Cassia when it is in full flower and easier to locate.
(more…)QR Codes on K’gari
FIDO recently decided to test the application of QR codes. (QR stands for Quick Response rather than ‘Queensland Rail’). We recently updated the Eurong sign shelter and instead of loading up a lot of blurb that people who want to make the most of their time on K’gari are loathe to stop and read, we tried using QR codes to sell ourselves and our message. Helping to Build the GSS Research Fund
As part of its fundraising efforts to build the Research Fund, FIDO is offering a series of Cruises in the Strait to enable people to have a personal experience of Great Sandy Strait. (more…)
Saving Great Sandy Strait
Great Sandy Strait is already listed as a Ramsar Wetland of International Significance, but along with Cooloola, it is has been nominated for inclusion on Australia’s National Heritage list as well as the World Heritage Tentative List. Great Sandy Strait and its natural integrity are vitally important to Fraser Island. There is now a groundswell of public concern over the future of Great Sandy Strait if the proposed Colton coal mine proceeds, as it currently has approval to do. (more…)
Quarantine – it’s more than just weeds!
I always thought I was fairly environmentally aware, but recently I have had my eyes opened to more than the issue introducing weeds to K’gari. When not in use, FIDO’s Land Cruiser is stored in Brisbane. I was shocked when I went down to put stuff in it that it was crawling with ants.
Field Work Report: August 2017 Happy Valley Weeding Trip
This was the 15th trip since Peter started as team leader and while his team have worked on a number of weed species during that time, the main focus has been on Abrus precatorius subspecies africanus. (more…)
Time, Tide and Tourism Conference
Never underestimate the power of sharing knowledge – especially when it comes to a World Heritage property.
One hundred people attended the 7th Biennial (Time, Tide and Tourism) Conference at the University of the Sunshine Coast Sippy Downs in August. Like the previous six conferences there was much informal interaction between the attendees, all of whom have a strong interest in K’gari. While some of the issues discussed such as managing K’gari’s invasive species are perennial topics, it was helpful for the audience to gain an insight into the progress being made and the on-going effort required. A Whole Lot of Rubbish
The Queensland Government is currently considering the Waste Reduction and Recycling Amendment Bill 2017. While strongly supporting the Bill for what it may do for waste reduction generally, its implications for Fraser Island were not immediately apparent until I began working on a submission to the Parliamentary Committee reviewing it. Two key features of the proposed legislation are a ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags and the introduction of a container refund scheme for Queensland. (more…)
Time, Tide and Tourism Fraser Island (K’gari) Conference
FIDO’s 7th Biennial Conference, to be held at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday 16 August, is intended to be complementary to a Fraser Island Symposium being organised by the University of the Sunshine Coast and being held at USC’s Fraser Coast Campus in November. FIDO’s conference is targeted more at laypersons with a special interest in Fraser Island, while the USC Symposium will appeal to a more academic audience.
