Mur’rindum (Butchulla language), Black-breasted button-quail, Turnix Melanogaster or BBBQ is listed as Vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and Queensland Nature Conservation Act 1992.

FINIA Tour of K’gari
Fraser Island Natural Integrity Alliance (FINIA) is justifiably proud of its status as an inclusive alliance of stakeholders who share an interest in that wonderful sand island off Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach (increasingly known by its Butchulla name of K’gari).

Happy Valley weeds on the run, but the battle never ends!
Fraser Island Defenders Organisation (FIDO) started attacking weeds at Happy Valley as far back as 2006. Peter Shooter first went there with a group of volunteers from Greening Australia in 2006, under the leadership of Andrew Sinclair. He recalls removing vast amounts of Easter cassia (Senna pendula var. glabrata) and umbrella trees (Schefflera actinophylla) around the village.

Feature Pest: Mossman River Grass
Mossman river grass or Mossman burr (Cenchrus echinatusis) is an invasive plant native to Central America and southern North America. It prefers sandy soils including at the beach, footpaths, roadsides, lawns, parks and disturbed areas – so K’gari provides some perfect habitat.

Weedspotting is Fun!
Queensland Herbarium’s Senior Ecologist, Dr Melinda Laidlaw led the FINIA Weedspotter Workshop held at the Maryborough Town Hall in November 2020. Fourteen FINIA and community members joined Mel for her two-hour introduction to weed spotting.
