In it for the long term – the Sandy Cape Lighthouse Weeding Program

Lighthouse keepers manned Sandy Cape Lighthouse between 1870 and 1997. Like many lighthouses in remote locations, supplies came in, but nothing left the site, with rubbish dumped ‘over the hill.’  With only tank water, hardy plants were introduced by keepers. Many of these survived and escaped, spreading out over 1Km radius.

Weed Watch Alert: Peruvian Primrose

Native to South America, Peruvian primrose (Ludwigia peruviana) is a small shrub that has become a serious pest weed in wetlands around Sydney. Peruvian primrose has not yet been found in Queensland but was recently located in Northern NSW.

Bernie Shakeshaft, Australia’s 2020 Local Hero

Over the years, K’gari has attracted some pretty special characters.  One of these, Bernie Shakeshaft, who works with at-risk teenagers in Armidale to help them on the path towards employment and further education and training, has been named this year’s Australian Local Hero in the Australian of the Year Awards.

‘Cat-astrophe’ on K’gari (Fraser Island)

Rangers in the field come across a number of different curiosities like this feral cat (felis cattus) skull. Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and Partnerships (QPWS&P) Ranger Wayne and Butchulla Community rangers Dwight and Tingira came across the skull on a western firebreak during recent cultural activities.

FIDO Happy Valley Weed Trip

Six FIDO volunteers (Chris Breitenbach, Larry Hohenhaus, Geoff Carwardine, Sandra Naidoo, Navin Naidoo and Su Dawson) joined leader, Peter Shooter for the recent Happy Valley trip from 27 October to 2 November.  They also had the pleasure of the company of Jodie Rainbow, Genevieve Rainbow, Louise Roberts and Blayde Foley from the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation for three days, Tuesday to Thursday.

Butchulla Land and Sea Ranger Training – Part 2

The partnership between the Butchulla Land and Sea Rangers (BLSRs), Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) and the World Heritage Unit within the Department of Environment and Science (DES) is continuing to strengthen.
