Give yourself a Weed Workout: Brazilian Cherry
Brazillian Cherry (Eugenia uniflora), an environmental weed, is a medium height shrub native to South America, Brazilian Cherry has a dense rounded habit with oval leaves, pointed tips and red new growth. It grows 3-6m tall and forms dense stands outcompeting native plants. (more…)
Blackberry Nightshade – Environmental Weed
One of the world’s worst weeds (Holm) Blackberry nightshade (Solanum americanum & S.nigrum) is a weed of 37 crops in 61 countries. Alternate host for diseases including anthracnose, Cercospora, blight, leaf spot and powdery mildew, at least 13 nematodes, 3 bacterial diseases, 7 fungal diseases including Rhizoctonia and over 30 crop viruses. Bitou Bush Surveillance UAV trial
Bitou bush has the ability to out compete and smother native coastal dune vegetation. Infestations within the Great Sandy National Park have been dramatically reduced since the 1980’s, with only isolated plants being found in the field today.
A Whole Lot of Rubbish
The Queensland Government is currently considering the Waste Reduction and Recycling Amendment Bill 2017. While strongly supporting the Bill for what it may do for waste reduction generally, its implications for Fraser Island were not immediately apparent until I began working on a submission to the Parliamentary Committee reviewing it. Two key features of the proposed legislation are a ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags and the introduction of a container refund scheme for Queensland. (more…)
Council Seeks Feedback on Fraser Island Waste Transfer Stations
Fraser Coast Regional Council is seeking community interest in how we can better manage the Council operated transfer stations on Fraser Island. As part of their community engagement, they recently conducted a mail out to local residents, ratepayers, and businesses. (more…)
Autumn Weed – Easter Cassia
Inspections in Fraser Island townships continue every May and November, with great work occurring with the volunteer groups and residents.
There are still plants being brought over from the mainland, seen without any known quarantine. Please think before bringing plants to the island to reduce the potential for spreading disease and pests. We are hoping that we have tackled most of the large broad-leaved peppers in Happy Valley, but if anyone knows of any more please let us know. This also applies with the spotting of Easter Cassia and umbrella trees in Eurong.
FINIA Meeting held on Fraser Island (K’gari)
The March 2017 FINIA meeting, which was on held on Fraser Island, provided an excellent opportunity for the members of FINIA to see first-hand the work being undertaken on the island by teams of FIDO volunteers (supported by BMRG through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme), the Fraser Island Association [FIA], and the Fraser Coast Regional Council with the support of Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service.
