Essential Services within the Great Sandy Area K’gari (Fraser Island) National Park
Unless you’ve been in outer space or 20,000 leagues under the sea, COVID-19 has affected everyone including the day to day work of all Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service & Partnerships (QPWS&P) personnel, from the city to the regional offices and remote areas of K’gari. As isolation measures continued around the country, the QPWS&P offices, campgrounds and day-use areas have been closed for public safety against this deadly and economically devastating virus.

Working collaboratively to ensure ‘Dingo-safe’ behaviour
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Butchulla Land and Sea Rangers, Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation staff and Queensland police staff are committed to ensuring ‘dingo-safe’ behaviours from everyone on K’gari.

Great Sandy National Park Wildfires
The wildfires that have affected much of Australia these past months didn’t spare the Great Sandy National Park either. Both the K’gari (Fraser Island) and Cooloola sections of the park experienced wildfire events during this time, including one wildfire on the island and five wildfires within Cooloola.

Protecting and Restoring K’gari’s Pandanus
In record time, the introduced insect responsible for Pandanus dieback, Jamella australiae, spread across the eastern shores of Fraser Island, leaving a wake of destruction.

Birds of a Feather Flock Together
K’gari-Fraser Island becomes the final resting place for a small number of migrating animal species from whales to birds that become stranded due to weather, limited food resources, illness or other influential reasons. This is also a natural part of the island’s nutritive cycles.

Moving Towards Eradication – Bitou Bush

Sniffing out foxes on K’gari
QPWS has recently utilised the latest weapon in pest animal species management – sniffing out pest animal species that have the potential to severely impact island ecosystems like Fraser Island (K’gari). Foxes are the most recent pest species to have been ‘captured’ on trail cameras installed on K’gari. Foxes can compete with the island’s top native predator, the dingo, for food resources and have the potential to decimate the island’s threatened species such as ground parrot, marine turtle hatchlings, waders and small mammal species. Rangers Burning Learning
Queensland Parks and Wildfire Service, Coastal and Islands region recently conducted their annual fire management workshop at Rainbow Beach. The annual fire refresher training programme was attended by staff working across the Great Sandy National Park (K’gari and Cooloola) and Marine Parks in the Great Sandy Area, with a traditional Welcome to Country delivered by Mr Boyd Blackman.
