Old Photos Revive Memories
Sue Sargent was instrumental in bringing FINIA collaborators together back in 2005 and along with the BMRG deserves credit for the creation of this wonderful collaboration. She continues to be FINIA’s chief inspirer and facilitator. (more…)
FINIA is turning TEN
When FINIA was founded in December 2005, the catalyst was a two-day gathering of a large number of groups and agencies at Dilli Village, Fraser Island, organised by the Burnett Mary Regional Group. Nobody then could have imagined that an organisation that has a set of objectives but no formal constitution, and therefore no formal membership, could have survived for so long and achieved so much just through communication and collaboration. Stowaway Antics – a story for children
John Sinclair’s children’s stories always carry a message and this one is no different – with the story of some suburban ants that plan their escape to Fraser Island. Suitable for children or adults (who will also get some fun out of the story), you should approach it with ANT-ICIPATION!

Autumn’s Worst Weeds!
Have you noticed plants in your gardens escaping and spreading into other parts of your garden or neighbourhood? You can help stop this spread by removing them wherever you see them and planting better alternatives that benefit the gardens diversity and reduce the possibility of weedy plants invading. (more…)
Using Bufo Toxin to Control Cane Toads
An innovative scientific trial using cane toads’ own defense mechanism (bufo toxin) against their own spawn could bring about the eradication of these pests from Fraser Island. (more…)
FIDO’s Bush Regeneration Program
FIDO held six weeding weeks on Fraser Island in 2015, three working on Eurong bush regeneration and three in Happy Valley with a heavy focus on controlling the Abrus infestation there. This year FIDO is making some transitional changes to its weeding and bush regeneration programs as some of the older players, including John Sinclair and Su Dawson, withdraw to a less active role and pass the leadership on to others. Bear study highlights public education and physical barriers to avoid conflict
A recent study lead by Ozgun Emre Can from Oxford University may provide some invaluable lessons on reducing dingo-human conflict on Fraser Island. The study which focuses on bears suggests a number of interventions that can be used by land managers.

FIDO doing their bit for Fraser Island’s Natural Integrity
FIDO now has three projects running on Fraser Island, with the development of Happy Valley as a project in its own right. It is a busy program but one that we are managing quite well at the moment. However we are always seeking more volunteers to become engaged and to feel some ownership of how the island is being managed. We are also seeking people interested in volunteer leading teams in the future.
Managing the Great Sandy’s links to Fraser Island
Lower Mary River Land & Catchment Care Group (LMRL&CCG) undertakes a number of projects that help manage threats to Fraser Island via the islands and adjacent mainland of the Great Sandy Strait (Round Island, Big Woody Island – Middle Bluff Lighthouse and Jeffrey’s Beach, Little Woody Island, Picnic Island, Duck Island), Fay Smith Wetlands and Hervey Bay foreshore. Since the November FINIA meeting, the team has been very busy.
