Turtle Monitoring & Egg Relocation Training
In December, three members of the Butchulla Land and Sea Ranger (BLSR) team (Myles Broome, Blayde Foley and Jodie Rainbow) undertook training with volunteers from Sandy Cape Lighthouse Conservation Association and Aub Strydom, learning how to monitor marine turtles and relocate nests up at Sandy Cape.

In October, six new trainees started with the Butchulla Land and Sea Rangers under their Butchulla Work Ready Trainee Program. Dwayne (Bob) Broome will supervise the team who have been employed for 24 weeks.

The cost of weeds to Australian agriculture now exceeds $4 billion per year. No estimate has been made of the cost of weeds to the environment, but environmental biosecurity is a rapidly developing area. Prevention and early intervention are the most cost-effective means of dealing with potential, new and emerging weeds in Queensland.

The Great Sandy Strait (the GSS) is a Ramsar site and an internationally significant site for shorebirds. For many years, QWSG has conducted regular shorebird surveys in the GSS.

In early December last year, Butchulla Land and Sea rangers participated in a training day with ReefClean partners Conservation Volunteers Australia. A marine debris clean and audit was completed at Eli Creek, a popular local fishing spot and unfortunately a dumping ground for residential waste.
(more…)Bernie Shakeshaft, Australia’s 2020 Local Hero
Over the years, K’gari has attracted some pretty special characters. One of these, Bernie Shakeshaft, who works with at-risk teenagers in Armidale to help them on the path towards employment and further education and training, has been named this year’s Australian Local Hero in the Australian of the Year Awards.
