The 2025 K’gari Clean Up, held from 23–26 May and organised by Four Wheel Drive Queensland (4WD QLD), was a major environmental success, highlighting the power of community collaboration in preserving one of Queensland’s most iconic natural landmarks.

The event attracted 826 volunteers from 24 affiliated 4WD clubs, supported by 30 sponsors and over 330 vehicles, who collectively removed 8,355 kg of waste across 114 km of K’gari’s coastline.

Now in its 24th year under the coordination of 4WD QLD, the clean-up not only tackled marine debris but also fostered stronger partnerships between recreational users, Traditional Owners (Butchulla people), local authorities, and environmental groups such as Tangaroa Blue and QPWS. Hard plastic remnants made up most of the collected waste (65.3%), reaffirming the importance of continued conservation efforts.

Despite logistical challenges—including beach erosion, track closures, and increased dingo activity—volunteers adapted swiftly, ensuring the event’s success. The efforts of Event & Sponsorship Coordinator Charlene Brown were especially recognised for her leadership and commitment.

Support from Diamond Sponsor Club 4×4 Insurance and other corporate partners enabled the event’s wide-reaching impact, while media coverage from Creek to Coast and social media amplified its visibility.

Planning for the 2026 event, scheduled for 22–25 May, will begin following the appointment of the new subcommittee in July. 4WD QLD extends its gratitude to all involved and welcomes expressions of interest for future participation via admin@kgaricleanup.au. This long-standing initiative continues to reflect the four-wheel drive community’s commitment to protecting K’gari.
