Are you BioBlitz curious, but worried about all the technical skills that go with IT? That’s Information Technology, and apologies for the geeky joke!

Cooloola Coastcare is offering a specialised learning event on some of the technology suitable for conducting or participating in a BioBlitz with practical, scientist-led workshops.

The hands-on training event, led by Coooloola Coastcare’s talented Randy Orwin, will bring together scientists, project leaders and experienced citizen scientists for three days of high-tech learning.

The event is designed to build participants’ confidence using tools such as online and offline mapping apps, wildlife photography, GPS units, acoustic recorders, and digital ID platforms to collect robust ecological data. All delivered with hands-on learning and field practice in the Cooloola Recreation Area of the Great Sandy National Park.

Technology that is being highlighted through the training:

  • iNaturalist and advanced features for biodiversity data collection and species identification
  • Mapping online and offline for site selection and survey tracking
  • Field photography (including macro-photography)
  • Geolocation of photographs
  • Data sharing
  • Tools for site selection for surveys

Check out the program here.

Scheduled for 27-29 March 2026, the training headquarters will be the Rainbow Beach Community Centre and Hall. Cost is only $110 per person (early bird discount available until 28 February 2026) or $137.50 per person after 1 March. Meal packages are also available.

So what are you waiting for? Register now for a great weekend and discover a whole new set of tech skills to apply, whether you are BioBlitz-curious or a dedicated volunteer. To register, please click here.
