This handy planting guide has been developed to assist landholders and land managers on Fraser Island in selecting local native plant species for use in gardens and landscaping.
All plant species highlighted in the guide occur naturally on Fraser Island. They are perfectly adapted to growing in sand, will add colour and local flavour to your garden, attract wildlife and help maintain Fraser Island’s natural integrity.
Plants are arranged according to their growth form, starting with herbs and grounds covers and continuing to tall trees. Notes on growth habit, height, flowering time and colour, and use in the garden are provided for each species.
Species images and text were provided by Michael Lowe Environmental Services, with cover images supplied by Kat de la Perrelle and Sunshine Photography, and layout and graphic design by Sally Joyce of SAJE Graphics.
This project was an initiative of the Fraser Island Defenders Organisation (FIDO) and supported by the Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG), Fraser Coast Regional Council, the Fraser Island Natural Integrity Alliance (FINIA) and the Australian Government’s Caring for Country.
