This May, Four Wheel Drive Queensland proudly celebrated the 25^th anniversary of the K’gari Clean Up event, with members from across Queensland coming together to help protect one of Australia’s most iconic natural destinations.

The annual event continues to demonstrate the four-wheel drive community’s commitment to conservation, ensuring future generations can experience the beauty of K’gari while promoting responsible four-wheel driving practices. Volunteers not only removed rubbish from the island but also helped educate participants on caring for the environment and leaving no trace when exploring this World Heritage-listed destination.

While attendance was lower than in previous years due to uncertainty surrounding fuel supplies and rising travel costs, the dedication of those who attended never wavered.

Together, 695 volunteers representing 24 affiliated Four Wheel Drive Queensland clubs covered approximately 114 kilometres of K’gari’s eastern beaches. The clean-up resulted in the collection of 4,784.18 kilograms of rubbish from the island’s coastal environment. Encouragingly, this year’s total was lower than previous years, suggesting that ongoing education, increased environmental awareness, and the continued efforts of volunteers are making a positive impact on preserving K’gari’s pristine coastline.

For 25 years, the K’gari Clean Up has been a shining example of what can be achieved when clubs, volunteers, sponsors, government agencies, and the wider four-wheel drive community work together. Four Wheel Drive Queensland extends its sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to the success of this milestone event and looks forward to continuing this important conservation effort for many years to come.
