Monitoring Sediment Movement Collaboratively

For the past three years, Fraser Island Defenders Organisation (FIDO) has embarked on a monitoring project on Fraser Island. Of particular concern was to try to quantify the impact of sediment movement along Fraser Island roads. FIDO established some posts to collect data on the volume of sand being deposited in some areas – mainly between Eurong and Central Station, with some measurements at Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora). At some sites we were also seeking to assess the extent of down cutting of the roads through measurement and photo-monitoring. (more…)

FINIA Congratulates the Butchulla People

The Fraser Island Natural Integrity Alliance congratulates the Butchulla People on the Federal Court’s formal recognition of their native title rights and interests over 164,958 hectares of land and waters of Fraser Island.

Friday 24th October was an emotional experience for the 450 Butchulla People gathered at the Federal Court’s temporary ‘courtroom’ on the beach as Justice Berna Collier officially recognised the Butchulla people as the island’s native title holders. (more…)

Bear study highlights public education and physical barriers to avoid conflict

A recent study lead by Ozgun Emre Can from Oxford University may provide some invaluable lessons on reducing dingo-human conflict on Fraser Island.  The study which focuses on bears suggests a number of interventions that can be used by land managers.

Recognising and Recording K’Gari’s (Fraser Island’s) Cultural Heritage

Funded through the Australian Government’s Indigenous Heritage Program, Fauna and Flora International along with South Pacific Strategic Solutions are currently assisting the Fraser Island World Heritage Area Indigenous Advisory Committee with a 1-year pilot project to train Butchulla community members and Aboriginal rangers to be able to recognise, record and assess cultural heritage resources on K’Gari (Fraser Island). FIDO doing their bit for Fraser Island’s Natural Integrity

FIDO now has three projects running on Fraser Island, with the development of Happy Valley as a project in its own right.  It is a busy program but one that we are managing quite well at the moment.  However we are always seeking more volunteers to become engaged and to feel some ownership of how the island is being managed.  We are also seeking people interested in volunteer leading teams in the future.

Managing the Great Sandy’s links to Fraser Island

Lower Mary River Land & Catchment Care Group (LMRL&CCG) undertakes a number of projects that help manage threats to Fraser Island via the islands and adjacent mainland of the Great Sandy Strait (Round Island, Big Woody Island – Middle Bluff Lighthouse and Jeffrey’s Beach, Little Woody Island, Picnic Island, Duck Island), Fay Smith Wetlands and Hervey Bay foreshore.  Since the November FINIA meeting, the team has been very busy.

Fraser Island Friends of Parks

Four experienced and well-respected organisations have signed-on with QPWS to deliver an expanded volunteer program in about 50 parks and forests across Queensland until June 2015.

Under new Friends of Parks contracts, more than 20 part-time co-ordinators will be employed to recruit, train and manage volunteers for an estimated 68,000 hours of exciting new volunteer and voluntourism projects that assist front-line management of parks. (more…)

FIDO Bush Regeneration Trip

Start 16-05-2014 End : 23-05-2014

We are aiming at a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer work during the week.

Each day we will endeavour to visit different parts of the island for walks, talks, swims, sightseeing etc.

This project is run on a not for profit basis. All tools, accommodation, food, transport (to and from Brisbane or Sunshine Coast in 4WD vehicle) and island tours are provided.
